I am sharing my sports definition for the word “care.” If you care for something, it is obviously important to you and a priority within your life. Having care in sports is vital for any team, program, or organization to be successful. If you don’t have everyone bought in, your team will eventually crumble. Below is my breakdown of the word “care” and how meaning defines success for a group.

Communication

  • The most important trait any successful team portrays. From the last person on the bench to the head coach, you are only connected and together as one unit through effective communication on and off the court. It is vital that everyone is on the same page. Poor teams have none, average teams have a little bit, and championship teams have constant talk. As a group, you are either willing to do it or you’re not.

Accountability

  • Standards must be exceeded to achieve success. It begins with the head coach and trickles on down throughout the rest of the program spreading accountability to everyone that plays a role within the team. On championship teams, coaches hold players accountable and players hold players accountable to maximize results.

Resilience

  • The best teams are able to overcome adversity quickly and be resilient through the toughest times. Communication and accountability play vital roles in a teams resilience. Whether that be a losing streak, bad loss, bad game, etc. Championship teams regroup together and get out of the mud together to continue on their path towards greatness.

Efficiency

  • From workouts, practice, class, etc. the best players and teams are efficient with their time. Once they start their work, they perform to the best of their ability. They strive for perfection in every aspect, wasting no time. How you prepare on and off the court is how you will perform in the game, in the classroom, in life.

Overall CARE

Get over yourself and care for the person next to you. Helping your teammates be better will make you better, ultimately making the team better!
